This textbook will help students in physical therapy programs build relationships with their patients and colleagues. After sections on foundations of engaged professionalism and effective communication, two sections are devoted to internal communication (what you say to yourself and how it affects your outlook and self esteem) and external communication topics, such as negotiation skills, social awareness, and emotional intelligence. The final section covers instrumental communication, with chapters on teaching advocacy and leadership skills. Learning features include overviews, key terms, and ongoing lighthearted "Champ and Blockhead" examples (think Goofus and Gallant). Other pedagogical features include within-chapter boxes of talking points and field notes with discussion questions, clinical scenarios, concept summary tables, activities, and web links. B&w illustrations are also included. Mueller teaches in the physical therapy program at Northern Arizona University. Annotation ©2010 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)
