Mueller and Mechler, both with pharmaceutical associations in Tuebingen, Germany, present information and analysis of 25 medicinal plants selected from nearly 5,000 that are used traditionally in Africa, in order to overcome mistrust in their use by Western doctors, pharmacists, and other health practitioners in non-industrialized countries. An introductory chapter on the need for collaboration between traditional and Western medicine discusses folk medicine in home remedies, the medicine of the traditional healers, conceptual traditional medicine, and integrating medicinal plants into primary health care. Another chapter cites malaria as an example of how helpful medicinal plants can be. Some of the plants are familiar, such as chili, guava, turmeric, and ginger.
