The enigma of the title is the rapid rise to prominence in the field of anthropology enjoyed by Franz Boas early on in his scientific career. A major figure in both cultural anthropology and science in general, a spokesman for equal rights and scientific literacy, Boas' early writings, published in German, have remained largely unknown to the English-speaking audience. They were mostly concerned with the Inuit and the Arctic, and the central themes of Boas' later work were already emerging in these early papers, published between 1883 and 1894. The author, an anthropologist and a geographer at McGill University, brings the import of those works to us, discussing Boas' background as a German Jewish immigrant and the ways it shaped his future thought, and analyzing the text, from early geographical studies to Inuit lexicon tracing the emergence of major themes and scientific interpretations of Inuit culture specifically, and human culture in general.
