Murgatroyd (classics, McMaster U., Canada) combines traditional tools of literary criticism with more modern techniques, especially from narratology and intertextuality, to analyze the mythical and legendary narratives as narratives, which make up nearly half of the poem by the Roman poet Ovid (43 BC-18 AD). There are other ways of looking at the passages, he acknowledges, but to keep his account manageable, passes over such aspects as the cultural, generic, and ideological. He assumes readers to be familiar with Classical culture in general, but not necessarily with the particular versions of myths and legends in the poem. He primarily uses the Tuebner text by Alton Wormell and Courtney. Annotation ©2004 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)
