This volume collects and summarizes some of the most interesting recent studies about international migration from World Bank researchers. The selected works - varying from descriptive to technical to policy-oriented - illustrate the spectrum of various methods with which one can analyze the nexus between international migration and development. Evidence from Albania, Nepal, Nicaragua, Tanzania, Tonga, and other countries is used to help build a framework within which to think about the subject. This framework is then applied to empirically document how households, particularly the poor households, engage in migration as one of their main livelihoods. The results demonstrate how diverse the migration experience may be and how big the impact is. Even though households with lower capacities may choose less lucrative and riskier destinations, they can leverage their migration to successfully get out of poverty. Finally, the volume demonstrates how much governments around the world can still do improve the fate of world migrants.
