Nádas (/music, University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill/) and Cuthbert (Massachusetts Institute of Technology) have done a great service to musicologists by bringing together twenty-seven articles on various aspects of the ars nova music of the fourteenth century, particularly in France and Italy. The articles first appeared in an international assortment of monographs and journals from the 1960's to 2004. They are arranged by topic: dating and location, sources, music theory, composers, literary studies, secular and sacred music, motets and the problematic area of performance practice. They note the changes over this period in notation and the development of polyphony, including experiments in complexity that would, and do, impress modern musicians. The articles are all in English with the exception of one in Italian. Annotation ©2010 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)
