This volume presents essays based on lectures presented at an international conference titled "Jews and Theater in an Intercultural World" held in 2008, in New York. In her preface, Nahson (performance studies, New York U.) explains that the focus of this volume is somewhat narrower than the conference, specifically addressing "...the performance of Jewishness in non-Jewish languages and societies...and the delicate and often problematic balance between minority and majority cultures...." Contributors are based internationally, and essays are arranged in sections on religion and origins, plays and playwrights, the Holocaust, interpretations and reinterpretations, and the contemporary scene (in Germany, Hungary, Poland, East-Central Europe and Eurasia).
