The rise of effective interventions has provided treatment options for medically resistant headache, which affects about 20% of the several million headache sufferers. Over the last three years, the medical literature has provided increasing support for interventional management of head and face pain, ranging from nerve blocks and radiofrequency ablation to electric stimulation and neuromodulation.

This will be the first book on the interventional management of head and face pain. Internationally recognized leaders in headache medicine will edit and contribute to the book, which will take an extremely practical approach and provide heavily illustrated step-by-step guidance on the approximately 15 procedures it describes. These will include trigger point injections, occipital nerve block, trigeminal branches nerve block, Gasserian ganglion block and RFA, sphenopalatine block and RFA, atlanto-occipital and atlanto-axial joint injection, cervical medial branch blocks, cervical facet intrarticular injections, cervical discogram, cervical epidural steroid injection, botox injection, IV infusion therapy, and acupuncture.

Preliminary chapters will give an overview of headache classification, provide synopses of headache types, and outline the indications for an interventional approach. The book will incorporate biofeedback and coping skills into its discussion of treatment as these are critical components of any kind of headache management.

While many volumes on headache exist, they do not address interventional approaches. Although pain medicine texts cover head pain, their coverage is limited. Clinicians looking to expand their services to include interventional approaches to headache need a comprehensive, detailed, step-by-step resource. This will be the first such book and is designed to appeal to neurologists, headache specialists, pain physicians, and anesthesiologists.
