A committee with members from the US, Britain, and Canada has updated the 1992 National Research Council report Recognition and Alleviation of Pain and Distress in Laboratory Animals, breaking it into two publications in order to incorporate the scientific developments in animal welfare, stress, distress, and pain since then. The report on distress was published in 2008. This one covers general principles and considerations of pain in research animals, mechanisms of pain, recognizing and assessing pain, effective pain management, and humane endpoints for animals in pain.
