This report, from the National Research Council's Committee on Improving Risk Analysis Approaches Used by the US Environmental Protection Agency, examines the EPA's current risk-analysis concepts and practices and offers recommendations for short and long-term improvements, in response to current challenges in risk assessment such as long delays and lack of data. The committee focused on human health risk assessment but also considered the implications of its recommendations for ecologic risk assessment. They focused on improving the technical analysis and utility that support risk assessment, including promoting more accurate characterizations of risk, making assessment more relevant to risk-management decisions, improving uncertainty and variability analysis and dose-response assessment, and establishing a process for stakeholder involvement.
