In four chapter-length essays, Neary (English, St. Norbert College) combines literary criticism with Jungian approaches to explore the depiction of journeys of enlightenment and journeys to the dark side in fiction, drama, and film. He examines works by contemporary and classic authors such as Shakespeare, Toni Morrison, and Yann Martel, and considers religious, spiritual, and psychological writing by authors including Buddhist nun Pema Choödron, Christian theologian Paul Tillich, Catholic theologian John Dune, and philosopher Robert Bly. Special attention is paid to the work of psychologist James Hillman. Stanley Kubrick's film Eyes Wide Shut is compared to Nathaniel Hawthorne's story "Young Goodman Brown." The book is distributed in the US by ISBS. Annotation ©2011 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)
