This festschrift for the eminent historian of ideas, Marcia Colish, reflects both the breadth of her interests and the profound scholarship of her work. The editors, Nederman (political science, Texas A&M) Van Deusen (music, Claremont Graduate School) and Matter (religious studies, University of Pennsylvania) are eminent scholars in their own right, as are the other contributors. The articles focus first on the intellectual traditions of the twelfth century, many touching on Colish's magisterial work on Peter Lombard. Others look at the ramifications of intellectual interpretations of concepts on the political and social ideas upon which medieval culture was based. The final section treats early modern inheritors of the Scholastics. Throughout all of the articles runs the thread of the intellectual search for understanding, especially of the ideas of those who came before. The authors place their subjects within the social and intellectual currents of the time, viewing the work through multiple lenses, a sure sign of Colish's influence.
