For health professionals, policy makers, researchers, and undergraduate and graduate students, Nelson (public health sciences, U. of Toronto, Canada) et al. present the findings of the Ontario Breast Cancer Community Research Initiative, which was created to investigate the experiences of women with breast cancer from marginalized and underrepresented groups and the social forces and inequities that shape their experiences. In the 12 chapters, social scientists, researchers, and cancer survivor advisory group members from Canada consider women's psychosocial needs and differences in treatment, care, and survivorship among Aboriginal and Francophone women, women of color, lesbians, young and older women, lower-income women, and those in rural areas. Chapters also describe the research approaches, stages, ethical issues, roles and perspectives, and challenges to guide those who might undertake similar investigations. The initiative aimed to use participatory research, mentor new researchers in community-based research, and use innovative methods of dissemination.
