With the higher employment mobility promised by globalization, and the increasing need for people capable of working at a global rather than national level, the time has come for states to cooperate in the education of those pursuing doctorates in a variety of fields, including the eminently practical science and business but also in social sciences, and the humanities. Based upon their meeting entitled "Forces and Forms of Change in Doctoral Education Worldwide" held in September 2005 at the U. of Washington, the contributors of these articles comment upon the possibilities for global-level doctorates as evidenced by programs in Germany, the UK, the Nordic countries, the European U. Institute, Italy, South Africa, Brazil, Mexico, Australia, Japan, India, Canada and the US. It appears no "global university" is likely to spring up soon, but individual nations are tailoring interesting models and programs with features applicable globally.
