Neset (American studies, University of Stavanger, Norway) gives an affectionate portrayal of nineteenth-century paintings of nature in both Europe and the United States. He invokes a state of mind that existed on both sides of the Atlantic and was expressed in similar styles and choice of subject. The longing for a return to Arcadia/Eden is evident in the lush landscapes of the Hudson River School, for example. These are in contrast to bleak scenes of impassible mountains and ships dashed upon the rocks, also popular. It is the waterscapes that Neset finds most intriguing. He quotes from poetry and prose of the time to contemplate the eternal draw of pools, rivers, lakes, and, ultimately, the sea. In this the Europeans and Americans shared an equal fascination. Neset's lyrical writing is embellished by many examples of the paintings. Annotation ©2009 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)
