In this fourth volume of a series in which Neusner (Bard College, Annandale-on-Hudson, NY) employs a documentary hypothesis in a synchronic (one by one) survey of narratives in Rabbinic writings, the noted Jewish studies scholar applies this hypothesis to a diachronic inquiry into how a given narrative moves from one document to another in sequence. Examining two formalized types of narrative, precedent and parable, he newly applies this analysis to the Mishnah, Tosefta, and Abot, and summarizes previous findings for the Sifra through Lamentations Rabbah from v.1-3.
