Using Rabbinic Judaism as a case study, Neusner (religion and theology, Bard College) explains how Judaism and Christianity ordinarily read Scripture before the advent of historicism about two centuries ago that is, for most of their history. The difference between historical and what he calls paradigmatic thinking, he says, is how time is marked and what the marks signify. He covers history, time, and paradigm in scripture; the absence of history; the presence of the past, the pastness, and the present; from history to paradigm; an exemplary pattern in place of lives of sages; and transcending the bounds of time. He concludes with five scriptural applications. Annotation ©2004 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)
