Edited by Neuwirth (Arabic literature, Free U. of Berlin, Germany), Sinai (a researcher at the Corpus Coranicum project of the Berlin-Brandenburg Academy of Sciences and Humanities), and Marx (administrative director of the Corpus Coranicum project), this volume brings together literary and historical studies of the Qur'an, the Islamic holy book. The 12 articles in the first part address issues concerning the political, economic, linguistic, and cultural context of the Qur'an, including the encroachment of large political powers of the time on the Arabian peninsula and the role of religion in the expression of political allegiances, the trade connections between Mecca and the wider world, the implications of early Islamic coinage for the dating and localization of the Qur'an, levels of literacy in pre-Islamic Arabia, and the influence of Greek and Syriac ideas in pre-Islamic Arabia. The remaining 15 papers focus more specifically on the Qur'an itself and on its transmission history, addressing such topics as the dating of the surahs, intertextuality with Christian and Jewish traditions, the artistic aesthetics of pre-Qur'anic Arabic literature, and the modalities of early Islamic textual transmission.
