Neville has turned her dissertation from Trinity College, University of Dublin into an excellent history of the Phoenician settlements in Spain. She blends archaeology and the writings of classical Greek and Roman authors to flesh out the culture of this people who sailed throughout the Mediterranean from Tyre to Carthage to Iberia long before it became a Roman lake. Neville covers the founding of Cadiz, Phoenician trade in metals from Iberia, society, religion, relations with local peoples and the other powerful nations of the ancient world. She also covers the decline of the Phoenicians, as shown in the artifacts found in Spain. This is a good corrective for those who know nothing more about the Phoenicians than "Carthage delenda est."
