One may argue that the study of economics has stood quietly near the edge of many intellectual disciplines without intruding into their consciousness. O'Brien (economics emeritus, U. of Durham) places it squarely and not so quietly in the center. He gives full due to eminent practitioners, even those who studied economics as part of the periphery of their field, and examines economics as a science within a history. He takes readers on a tour of the "five methodological detours" of economics, including game theory and models of exchange rates, and analyzes the flawed attempts to resuscitate the static general equilibrium model. He then surveys classical economics and focuses on the work of Alfred Marshall, Edwin Cannan, J. R. McCulloch and Paul Samuelson. O'Brien includes an extended review of the work of Fredrich Hayak, whose work on the intellectual basis of economics provided a framework for understanding it as a scholarly pursuit.
