This overview of servant leadership in nursing and health care includes an original model of servant leadership in nursing, plus the voices of 75 contemporary nursing leaders interviewed for the author's study, 'Called to Serve: The Lived Experience of a Nursing Vocation.' The book begins by broadly exploring nursing as a vocation of caring, and discusses the concept of servant leadership as applied to nursing. It then explores the spiritual heritage of servant leadership in nursing from the early Christian era through the Middle Ages and the post-Reformation period, and examines the Biblical roots of the nurse's call to serve. The 'Called to Serve' study is introduced, and the five nursing vocational themes identified in the study are presented, along with data on nursing servant leadership in settings such as the hospital, clinic, and long-term care facility. O'Brien teaches nursing at The Catholic University of America. Annotation ©2010 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)
