The subject of motherhood crosses many disciplines but has come into its own as a discipline in the last decade or so. This three-volume reference offers approximately 800 entries related to a variety of motherhood themes: history, social issues, families, health, society, motherhood around the world (entries for more than 200 countries) and in the United States (entries for every state), motherhood studies, and prominent mothers. Entries are written in a manner accessible to high school students and general readers. They range in length from a column or two (country entries, for example) to several pages (e.g. art and mothering, artificial insemination, drug abuse). Each has cross references and a bibliography. Arrangement is alphabetical, with thematic access provided via the Reader's Guide in the front matter and the index in volume 3. A glossary and resource guide are included as well as a highly selective chronology, and the appendix offers motherhood statistics around the world. Editor O'Reilly (women's studies, York U., Canada) writes and works extensively in the realm of motherhood studies and is founding a motherhood consortium and a museum.
