During the antebellum period, many states began to establish "normal schools" to meet increasing needs for well-trained elementary school teachers. Nearly 200 of these schools would later grow into state colleges and regional universities, shedding their original names along the way. This volume offers a detailed history of these largely forgotten institutions and celebrates their radically democratic approach to education. Ogren teaches at the U. of Iowa's College of Education.
