Okagbue-Reaves (social work, Eastern Michigan U.) analyzes treatment experiences and outcomes of Africa-American women in substance abuse treatment for crack cocaine, and identifies factors that contribute to their successful recovery as defined by completion of treatment and substance abstinence for one year afterward. Studying a sub-sample of 768 clients in outpatient and residential drug-free public sector programs, she finds a relationship between the type of treatment, the length of stay, services received while in treatment, and women's ability to remain drug free for a year after discharge.
