The period saw the unstable coalition of lineages that characterized the Yamato kingdom replaced by a rapidly centralizing state ruled by an emperor, tenno, says Ooms (Japanese history, U. of California-Los Angeles). A bureaucratic structure, law codes, and grand capitals soon followed, and along with them narratives of the old dynasties and the mytho-historical beginnings for the ruling house that persist today. It is those symbolic representations of the emperor and empire that he focuses on. Among them are great purifications and other new court rituals, the liturgical state, Chinese Daoism, revenge of the living dead, and purity as a weapon.
