The concept of maslaha, sometimes translated as "public interest" or "social good," has become a central legal principle within Islamic law that allows for law-finding and legal change. Opwis (Arabic and Islamic studies, Georgetown U.) explores the development of the concept and its application, focusing on writings of legal theory by key Sunni jurisprudents from the fourth century CE to the 14th century CE, by which time maslaha had reached maturity as a legal concept that allowed jurists to extend and adapt the law to evolving social realities. She argues that the emergence and development of the concept of maslaha happened in relation to a nexus of interrelated questions regarding the application of the law to situations not addressed in Islamic religious texts, the causal relationship between God's will and human understanding of God's will, the epistemological basis of maslaha, and the resolution of contradiction in God's law.
