An anthology published by the American Psychological Association, this book includes papers on older LGBT adults written from a mainstream counseling and social service perspective. There is one chapter on what professionals should know about transgender aging (invisibility, violence, poverty, discrimination, and health problems related to all these are the primary factors). As all the other papers speak generally about LGBT people, there is relatively little about bisexual or transgender experience, or about the ways in which the lives of older lesbians and gay men, or people in different populations, are different. Some contributors address what is lacking in this type of research, acknowledging that existing studies mainly focus on white, urban, educated, middle-class, non-trans, self-identifying gay and lesbian people without major health challenges. Others deal with the consequences, and issues such as health disparities and the existence of LGBT people in settings such as residential care and veteran's services.
