This book is designed to help school personnel understand how the law provides them with rights, protections, and responsibilities. While the target audience is teachers, the book will also be useful to administrators and pre-service teaches. The book can be used as a text in an introductory course on school law or in professional development seminars. After a brief synopsis of the constitutional provisions and statutes that are discussed throughout the book, coverage encompasses school governance and the teacher, basic constitutional rights and freedoms, employment terms and conditions, and collective bargaining. Other subjects are employment discrimination, teacher discipline and dismissal, curricular and instructional issues, and tort liability. Each chapter offers key concept boxes, margin notes, cases and vignettes, and summaries of judicial opinion, and closes with FAQs and recommendations. Appendices provide a review of court systems and the authority of courts, tips for finding legal resources and doing basic legal research, a list of education law and federal court websites, and a glossary. Osborne teaches graduate courses in school law and special education law. Russo teaches law and education at the University of Dayton, Ohio.
