The arrival of gunpowder on European battlefields in the 13th century tipped the advantage in sieges to the attacker. Ostwald (history, Eastern Connecticut State U.) explains the central role that Sébastien le Prestre de Vauban's (1633-1707) design of fortifications played in shifting the advantage back to defense. From a family of poor provincial nobles in Burgundy, Vauban volunteered for the army, and his abilities as a military engineer eventually propelled him to the highest honors. His design principles, indeed some of the actual structures he designed, continued to play a role in the French military through World War II.
