The relationship of Italian religious reformers and the Tudor court is not generally examined. Overell (history, The Open University, UK) examines the influence of both early Italian humanists at the court of Henry VIII and, more especially his son, Edward VI. With the restoration of Catholicism under Mary Tudor, the Italian reformers were once again exiles and the humanist, but orthodox, Cardinal Pole brought a different Italianate style. While Elizabeth I was not as friendly to the Italians, mainly for political reasons, translations of their work were widely read in England. Overell brings the personalities of these men to life but her main emphasis is on their role within both Reformation and Counter-Reformation.
