At first it would appear that Danish and Norwegian national identity would have little to do with the nineteenth-century enthusiasm for Orientalism. However Oxfeldt shows both Denmark and Norway considered themselves on the periphery of Europe, or at least at the periphery of the intelligentsia of Europe, and rather than being an exercise in identifying and excluding the exotic Other through Orientalism, the variants in these practiced in these Scandinavian nations attempted to emulate that of Paris. As Nordic Orientalism changed across the century, so did perceptions of modernity, cosmopolitanism and urbanism; as contact with the real Orient expanded, so did the Nordic perception of Orientalism.
