In this thorough study on Plutarch's reception in Italy, Pade (Aarhus U., Denmark) compiles a guide to Renaissance philosophy, with attention to its understanding of classical thought. In Volume One her first chapter presents a complete survey of the reception of Plutarch to the 13th century. She surveys the interest in Plutarch, first in the Latin West, then in Florence, Venice, northern Italy, Ferrara, and Rome. In Volume Two the prefaces and lists of translations are presented, grouped according to author, and concluding with a comprehensive catalogue of manuscripts that contain Latin translations of Plutarch's Lives and related texts. Appendixes contain lists of scribes and owners, and datable manuscripts, manuscripts, incunabulae, and a bibliography. Some excellent color plates of illuminated initials are included.
