The crystals are called low-dimensional because their atomic arrangement is such that electrons move preferentially in only one or two directions, which makes the compounds highly anisotropic and otherwise interesting. Among them are several families of semiconductor crystals. Physicists Panich (Ben-Gurion U. of the Negev) and Sardarly (National Academy of Sciences of Azerbaijan) review the recent technical literature and report the findings of their own research into a particular class of low-dimensional materials. Their topics include crystal structure at ambient conditions, experimental studies of the electronic structure, phase transitions in chain-type crystals under ambient pressure, relaxor behavior and the nano-domain structure of doped and irradiated TlInS2 crystals, and elastic properties of low-dimensional compounds.
