Motivated by the success of Catholic and other religious schools as well as by the reported failure of many public schools to educate Hispanic children, Pantoja (ethnic studies, Borough of Manhattan Community College) investigates the role of religion in the education of Hispanic children attending public and religious schools in New York City. The study examines how being Catholic or Conservative Protestant, and having high or low levels of commitment to one's belief and church, compare to other variables that also affect parental involvement, and what parents believe and do that is religiously based, which strengthens the good work of their children's schools or, alternatively, compensates for the gaps educators are leaving in the students' educational careers. For teachers, school administrators, policy makers and religious leaders. Annotation ©2006 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)
