Drawing on the finds of decades of earlier excavations there and his own excavation and research, Papadopoulos (his affiliation is not noted) has re-created the topography and use of the early Iron Age potters' quarter which was located on what became the Athenian Agora. Following an introduction to the excavations, the text offers analysis of selections of the various ceramics, test-pieces, and other refuse from the area; discussion of the methods and developments of firing ceramics; and an extensive discussion of the area's topography. An appendix on the estimation of ceramic firing temperatures using thermomechanical analysis is by Michael Schilling (senior scientist, Getty Conservation Institute).
