In a revision of the dissertation for his 2008 PhD degree in classics at the University of Dublin, Papantoniou (Trinity College Dublin) describes the transformation from the segmented administration of the Cypriot city-kingdoms to the unitary island-wide government by a foreign Ptolemaic correspondent, and how it affected the socio-cultural infrastructure of the island. Because of the importance of religion in antiquity and the availability of the archaeological record, he approaches the horizon of the transition by focusing on the archaeology of religion in relation to social power. He covers historical narratives, theoretical considerations, and a methodology for interpretation; sacred landscapes before and after the transition; Soloi and Amathous as case studies of change and variation; and Hellenistic portraits and royal sculpture in a Cypriot context.
