Emphasizing use in clinical situations, Parnell, a clinical psychologist, consultant, and EMDR trainer, discusses successful use of eye-movement desensitization and reprocessing techniques for treating trauma and phobic disorders. Writing for EMDR-trained therapists and not beginners, she focuses on case formulation, ego strengthening, target development, and the ability to work with processing difficulties. She reviews its theoretical basis and procedural steps and covers preparation for trauma processing, including resource development and installation, and methods for unblocking blocked processing, such as the creative use of interweaves. A section on the EMDR session is provided, followed by a discussion of clinical applications. The book is meant to supplement Shapiro's Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (2001). Material from Parnell's training workshops serves as a foundation for the book and some material from her volume EMDR in the Treatment of Adults Abused as Children is included.
