Parsons, former education editor of Christian Science Monitor, presents easy-to-use activities that families and teachers can use to help children learn to read. The method she describes is developed especially for students who have not yet learned to read by the end of third grade, and especially for students who are kinesthetic learners. Her list of supplies includes a sand tray for tracing letters, words, and numbers, tracing paper, and clay, as well as other common materials for "acting out" concepts with physical objects. Many of the lessons integrate basic mathematics concepts in addition to narrative, comprehension of factual information, and story creation. There is no subject index.
