The study on which the volume is based began during the middle 1990s as a response to the impacts of sand and gravel extraction and other development in the Till-Tweed river catchments. It sets out a framework for investigating particular sites from historical and archaeological perspectives that the Northumberland County Council can use to help with the future management of the region's historic environment. They cover past and present landscapes, the Stone Age landscape, monuments, evaluation trenching of cropmark sites, managing the historical environment, and the landform element approach in practice. A companion volume describe how to present an integrative archaeological and historical synthesis for the whole region, contributing to a growing trend in archaeology.
