The study on which the volume is based began during the middle 1990s as a response to the impacts of sand and gravel extraction and other development in the Till-Tweed river catchments. It sets out a framework for investigating particular sites from historical and archaeological perspectives that the Northumberland County Council can use to help with the future management of the region's historic environment. A companion volume describe how to present an integrative archaeological and historical synthesis for the whole region, contributing to a growing trend in archaeology.
