Psychologist Paulson is a Fellow of the American Academy of Traumatic Stress and a veteran of the US Marines who served in Vietnam. He teams with Krippner, a professor of psychology at Saybrook Graduate Institute and Research Center, to look into the embodied experience of combat life and the life that follows it, particularly among those diagnosed with subclinical or overt post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and those at risk for developing it later in their lives. They overview the effect of trauma on the mind/body, review the history of diagnosis and treatment, describe the wartime and coming-home experiences of combatants, and describe conventional and alternative treatment approaches. Original poetry on war and PTSD by Tom Greening and D. Michael Schmidt is used throughout the book. Annotation ©2007 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)
