Oprah Winfrey is an American phenomenon. As journalist Peck states, she moved from talk show host to cultural icon, an example of success, influence and philanthropy. Peck sees Winfrey as a symbol of "neoliberalism", a political, economic and ideological system that has elements of both Reagan economics and Clinton social beliefs. She traces Winfrey's change from "trash talk" shows to a more positive outlook with the aim of "uplifting" her audience. The advent of the book club, websites, magazine and the many charitable foundations is seen by Peck as an unrealistic example for average Americans. She argues that Winfrey, like other neoliberals, believes that anyone with a good work ethic can succeed, a concept that was popular in the late nineteenth century. This has caused her to cancel programs in the United States with the explanation that Americans don't appreciate their opportunities. Peck states that she is not a fan of Winfrey's, something she makes clear in the text and a fact which may color her conclusions. Annotation ©2009 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)
