In this text for advanced students of forest science, ecology, and environmental studies, Perry (Cascade Center for Ecosystems Management, Oregon State University) offers an inclusive survey of boreal, temperate, and tropical forests, with an emphasis on ecological concepts across global, landscape, and microscopic scales. Early chapters define basic terms and examine the global ecosystem and the role played by forests within it. Subsequent chapters deal with environmental factors that influence global and local patterns in vegetation type, and relationships between structure and function at the scale of landscapes and local ecosystems. This second edition incorporates conceptual and technological advances in the field since the first edition was published in 1995.
