Petuch (geology, Florida Atlantic U., Boca Raton) and Drolshagen, until recently the head photographer for Florida Atlantic University, describe and illustrate fossilized shells in Chesapeake Bay and along the surrounding coastal plains of Maryland and Virginia and discuss the creatures that left them there some 5-23 million years ago. A major theme throughout is how the fluctuating climates of the period are reflected in the rapid evolution and extinction of Miocene mollusks, and so also in the rich array of fossil shells to be found in eroded areas. They explore the Miocene seas of the area, the geologic framework, and the ecphoras. Then they survey in the fossils of the Calvert, Choptank, St. Mary's and Eastover formations.
