At the beginning of the 20th century a series of trials were held surrounding the killing of a messianic cult leader operating in Corvallis, Oregon and the subsequent revenge killing of the first killer after his acquittal for reasons of insanity. Although there have been earlier monographs on the cases, Phillips and Gartner (both of the Centre of Criminology, U. of Toronto, Canada) contend that they were marred by misinformation and lack of historical context. They argue that the case reveals numerous things about the development of civil and criminal law, social beliefs about religion and gender, and other topics.
