This book aims to synthesize research on the role of peer interaction in second language (L2) learning. It will bring together in one coherent volume a discussion of what current research suggests about the nature of L2 peer interaction and its contribution to second language acquisition for children and adults, for beginning through to advanced learners. Specifically, it seeks to explore what current research suggests about the nature and effect of language learners’ oral or written classroom interaction when engaged with one another rather than with a native speaker and/or teacher. Approaches to L2 peer interaction research will be complemented by reference to research on L1 peer interaction and the role of peer interaction in other educational disciplines. In doing so, Peer Interaction and Second Language Learning will clarify features of effective (and ineffective) peer interaction for second language learning across a range of contexts.
