Philp (formerly pharmacology and toxicology, U. of Western Ontario) presents an overview of the role of toxicology in environmental health hazards. After discussing basic principles of toxicology and risk analysis, 11 chapters separately look at threats such as water and soil pollution, toxicity of metals, pesticides, food additives and drug residues, mycotoxins, radiation, environmental hormone disruptors, and other hazards to human health. A final chapter looks at such interconnected phenomenon as global warming and natural disasters, as well as the effect that food production has on the environment. Twenty-five brief case studies of environmental hazards are also presented. Annotation c. Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)
