Most lubricants are built on a petroleum-based stock, says Polish-born Canadian chemist, Pillon, but only some crude oils are suitable to produce lube oil base stocks, and the finished lubricants represent a high added-value group of product that require highly technical expertise to formulate. In the first two chapters, she synthesizes the widely available information about the conventional refining of crude oils and the non-conventional processing of base stocks. Then she turns to the heart of the matter: how lubricants can meet industry specifications for surface activity, which describe their properties at the oil/air interface such as the resistance to foaming and air entrainment; at the oil/water interface, such as emulsification or demulsification; and at the oil/metal interface, such as rust and corrosion inhibition and wear prevention.
