Pinch (nursing, health policy and ethics, Creighton U., Omaha, Nebraska) presents findings of a longitudinal research project investigating parents as the central feature of the high-risk perinatal situation. Following a review of existing material on ethical decision-making for high-risk newborns and the historical development of neonatal intensive care units (NICUs), Pinch analyzes the parents' descriptions of the NICU experience, their moral orientations and perceptions of ethics and decision-making for their infants, and their recommendations for the future. She concludes with an interpretation and application of the study's results, considers possible gender-related issues in the parental experience, and suggests the implications of the findings for families and society-at- large.
