This rich study presents a thoughtful and extended discussion of the popular theme of the Fool, and specifically, the Fool traveling, that were represented in Northern Renaissance woodcuts and other types of prints, with detailed discussion of the origins and symbolism of their iconography. In her lengthy introduction, Pinson discusses Sebastian Brant's influential publication The ship of fools and its subsequent imitators and translations. She continues this discussion in the succeeding chapters, which take up themes that include the fool as a mirror of society, the fools' journey, the triumph of Dame Folly, the fool and death, and The wayfarer by Hieronymus Bosch. The volume is heavily illustrated with b&w and some color images, all of excellent quality. It is distributed in North America by The David Brown Book Co.
