At the end of Volume One, we left our intrepid Corps of Discovery camped at Fort Mandan for the winter of 1804-05. Here, in 180 detailed contour maps, they continue upriver on the Missouri, then portage the Great Falls, cross the continental divide at Lemhi Pass and so leave official US territory, and encounter in turn the Salmon, Clearwater, and Snake rivers. We leave them camping where the Snake joins the Columbia. The meticulously prepared maps show the courses of the rivers at the time of exploration, as well as their modern beds. Plamondon, a cartographer based in Vancouver, Washington, provides an introduction; but otherwise, diary quotes and cartographer's notes on the maps themselves are the only text. Due in 2003, the third and last volume of this ambitious labor of love will chronicle the journey to the Pacific and the return route. The book is slightly oversize: 9x12<">. Annotation c.
